Wednesday, July 17th: Alpine, WY or …what a breeze!

We’re not starting out immediately, my woman said to me. First do some more necessary shopping – visit the pet store (which was closed till 10 a.m.) and the post office. There were still grey clouds hanging over the mountains, with a 50% chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon. There is a nice bike path out of Jackson, but it has some very short steep hills – my woman skipped them and stayed on the main road. Once over the Snake River (our river of the day), there was some road work. My woman hoped they were widening the road a bit – giving it at least a shoulder, but no! It is still a dangerous route until you get to Hoback Junction. Here, at the gas station, a stop was necessary. Hey, what’s that? The sun is out! Blue sky again! We crossed the Snake again and soon we passed the Boy Scout High Adventure camp.

It does look great to do these things! Our route is mostly downhill and we’re making good time! It’s a fast fun ride along the Snake, which is hard to see from the side where we bicycle. Once in a while my woman crosses the road to enjoy the scenery of the river and the people doing the whitewater rafting.

In no time we get out of the canyon and see Alpine in the distance. It’s still early and we decide to take a break along the Snake. A blue heron is standing in the river. We watch how the water splits and somehow seems to flow to the sides – there is a shoal in the middle of the river. We stay there until those clapping flying yellow insects come to close to us – we appreciate the applause but don’t want to be covered by those things! Just 100m further is our final destination: the Nordic Inn. Friendly people welcome us in their lovely place!
